Alex Roberts’ fascination with coffee began at an early age when he started working part time as a barista in a coffee shop. Unlike the typical barista, Roberts soon ventured from the conventional path and turned his side job into his vocation. "I always loved tasting new coffees and experimenting with different brewing methods," he says. "From my first coffee job, I knew I wanted to learn to roast." Roberts was immediately hooked.
A Bay Area native, Roberts grew up in San Francisco and Moraga before moving to Humboldt County for school and to work in various cafes immersing himself in the world of coffee. In 1996, he started working for a prominent bay area roaster, where he spent eight years as a master roaster and wholesale manager.
He then later ventured out on his own to start CoffeeTech, a coffee equipment sales and service company that sources and sells coffee roasting equipment along with new and vintage espresso machines. In addition, Roberts has consulted for Bay Area coffee companies, providing his expertise on roast profiling, plant layout and green coffee sourcing.
Roberts and Green have been working closely since 2006, and officially launched ROAST Coffee Company in 2008.
